Handsome devil, wasn't he? This is my grandfather, Clyde Lester Weir, in about 1936. He was married to Alyce Greta Conroy. I only have a copy of this picture, but my father knows that Clyde (his father) was 24 years old in the picture. It probably was taken on Alyce and Clyde's wedding day--how many occasions could he have had to wear a tux?
Clyde was from Scotch Village, Hants County, Nova Scotia. He was the son of John Lester and Leona Frances (McGowan) Weir.
This picture was taken to commemorate the 50th wedding anniversary of William Daniel Conroy and Bertha Evelyn Tupper. They were married on 28 Apr 1899 and went on to have thirteen children (including my grandmother, Alyce).
William was the son of Michael and Bridget (Lyons) Conroy. Poor Bridget died when William was only six months old, so William was left with her parents and Michael moved to the US to find work.
Bertha was the daughter of Robert G. and Ruth Elizabeth (Bentley) Tupper.
This is my grandmother, Alyce Greta Conroy (soon to be Mrs. Clyde Lester Weir), when she was about twenty years old. At the time, she was in nurse's training in Dartmouth and had just met my grandfather. Alyce was the daughter of William Daniel and Bertha Evelyn (Tupper) Conroy.
This picture is mounted in a folding display-case sort of contraption. Just below the picture is an impression made by the photographer, but I can't make anything out but "Halifax, N.S."
Aren't they lovely? These are my paternal grandparents on their wedding day, 6 Jun 1936. They met while in nurse's traning in Dartmouth, and they married in Halifax. The groom is Clyde Lester Weir, born 23 Jul 1912 in Scotch Village, Hants County, Nova Scotia. He died just a few years ago, on 28 Nov 2001. The bride is Alyce Greta Conroy, born 2 Apr 1914. She was the daughter of Bertha Evelyn Tupper and William Daniel Conroy. Alyce died on 15 Sep 1999. That means they were married for 63 years. They had two children and four grandchildren, and now have seven great-grandchildren.
I have no idea who this little girl is. The photographer is C.W. Kelly of Truro, N.S.
I love this picture, probably because my dad loved this picture. I have no idea where the original is, but my dad always had an 8x10 copy and he made one for me too. Anyway, this picture has always been around, my whole life, and it reminds me of my father and this genaelogy thing we did together.
This is a picture of Robert G. and Ruth Elizabeth (Bentley) Tupper, their daughter Bertha Evelyn (Tupper) Conroy, and her husband William Daniel Conroy. It was taken around the turn of the century, and possibly in 1899 or 1900. Bertha later wrote that she and her husband lived with her parents for a short time after they (Bertha and William) were married, and they married on 28 Apr 1899.
I don't know who the man on the far left is (holding the plow), but then from left to right it is Robert G. Tupper, Elizabeth Tupper (in the doorway), Bertha Conroy, and William Conroy.
Isn't she festive? The woman in this picture is obviously labled Sophie Bentley. John Charles Brennan has a great website about the Bentley family that indicates that Sophie Rebecca Bentley, born on 6 Dec 1849, was the first cousin of Ruth Elizabeth (Bentley) Tupper (I haven't verified that however). That hair, though, that hair! It seems to be early 1870s, which certainly jives with her early-twenties appearance, don't you think?
I think the caption was written by Elizabeth's daughter Bertha Evelyn (Tupper) Conroy. On the back of the picture is the photographer's information: "Marsters, Cor. King & Germain Sts, St. John N.B."
I found a Joseph D. Marsters listed as a photographer on page 403 of the Hutchinson's New Brunswick Directory for 1865-6. He was working out of the St John Hotel which just happens to be located at the corner of King and Germain Streets (except now it is completely redone and owned by Delta). I haven't found anything else on Marsters yet, although I've only checked the 1881 census. There are no other New Brunswick directories online.
The mother in this picture is Ruth Elizabeth (Bentley) Tupper, and pictured with her are her two children: Bertha Evelyn Tupper on the left and Erlon Howard Tupper on the right. I think Bertha looks to be no more than three in the picture (she couldn't stay still for it), so that dates it at about 1885. That would make Erlon ten or eleven and Elizabeth thirty-five.
I believe the handwriting belongs to the little girl in the picture, Bertha Evelyn (Tupper) Conroy. She lived until 1980. Of course, the picture is a tin type and has no photographer information.
J. Scott Hutton was the principle of the Deaf and Dumb Institute in Halifax, Nova Scotia starting in the summer of 1857. This was only a few months after Robert G. Tupper, son of Samuel and Martha, started at the school. Apparently being the principle also meant that Mr. Hutton also taught, as Robert was described as his pupil. According to Robert's obituary, Mr. Hutton served as an interpreter at Robert's wedding (to Ruth Elizabeth Bentley).
This photo is labeled in the album as Elizabeth Tupper. If you compare it to the other labeled picture of her (Lizzie Bentley) I think you'll see the resemblance.
Unfortunately, since this is a tin type, there is no photographer's information available. Like almost every other tin type I have, her cheeks have been touched with a little bit of pink.
